We just got back from Josh's physio session - his first one after a three week break ( we had been going weekly up until that point) - and the first time he has seen his therapist since he started crawling. She is thrilled with how well he is doing and how far he has progressed since his last session.
When Josh had his physio assessment 2 1/2 months ago, he was below the 5th percentile for gross motor movement based on his age. He had made slow and steady gains each week but hadn't yet breached the 5th percentile mark. Today he is above the 25th percentile! Talk about progress! His therapist considers him 'caught up' and now classifies him as 'high risk' rather than developmentally delayed. I am so proud of him; he has worked so hard.
He'll still go to physio every 3 to 4 weeks just to make sure that he's still progressing as expected and that he doesn't hit any plateaus. So far his crawling looks symmetrical and he doesn't seem to favour one side of his body over the other, but this is something else that she will continue to monitor. The majority of the brain damage is on the left side of his brain (affecting the right side of his body) so it's pretty amazing that so far everything is symmetrical. I guess Josh is the poster boy for infant neural plasticity!
In other news, I've been working on Josh's story and I have the first 2 chapters completed. I know I said that I was going to wait and post the whole story at once but I've since decided against this. I think it would be way to much to read at once. Chapters 3 and 4 will likely take me the longest to write so I want to get a head start on those first and then I will post the first two. Stay tuned!
