Joshua's First Heart Day

Wow! It's hard to believe that one year ago today Joshua had open heart surgery to perform the arterial switch operation. It was by far the longest and most stressful day of my life, full of so many thoughts and emotions I hope to never experience again. It has been a pretty wild year since then but one mostly filled with hope and happiness.

We have chosen to view this very special day as one of celebration as it gave Joshua a new start at life. I've baked him a heart cake and we will be having a small party this evening to mark the occasion - a tradition I plan on continuing every year. I will definitely post pictures soon and let you all know how it went.

In other news, Josh had an appointment with Dr. Ponesse (a neurologist/child development specialist) at the Ottawa Children's Treatment Centre last week. The appointment was supposed to be at 9:30am but there was a mix-up and we had to wait until 11:30am. I somehow managed to keep him entertained for those two hours (mind you it wasn't easy) and he hardly made a peep - he was such a good boy! Even the receptionist mentioned how good he was while having to wait so long. Josh is such an easy-going little guy.

Anyway, the appointment went well and Dr. Ponesse is pleased with how Josh is doing. Josh is within his age range for all developmental milestones (albeit and the lower end of the age range - but within range just the same!) Dr. Ponesse seems to think that Josh may very well be one of those kids that to look at him you can't tell that there is anything wrong [neurologically]. And true enough that's certainly the case right now.Josh doesn't have any words yet but is of little concern right now as he is still fairly young. 18 months old will be a better gauge of language development, so Josh will see Dr. Ponesse again in March and if there is still a lag in language Josh will likely be referred to a speech language pathologist. I'm not sure if this will be necessary or not. He certainly understands what we are saying when we talk to him, and he sure does babble a lot, so I think it's just a matter of time before he starts applying meaning to his babbling.

September sure was a busy month for appointments - this past Monday Josh also had an appointment with his pediatrician for his 13 month check-up and immunizations. Josh still weighs 22 lbs and is now 30 1/4 inches tall. He's getting to be such a big boy!

I can't seem to think of anything else to report so I will leave you with a picture of Josh showing off his two bottom teeth (his only teeth, in fact). It was quite difficult getting a picture of Josh in which you can see his teeth. There always seemed to be a lip or a tongue in the way - thank goodness for digital cameras!

And of course I can't leave without saying: Happy First Heart Day Joshua!!
